Hair is dissolved in certain acids and then tested using mass spectrometry or gas chromatography. The acid dissolving process is accelerated and enhanced through the improvement of the sample’s specific surface area.
In this particular case, the FRITSCH Mini-Mill PULVERISETTE 23 is used.
Approximately 300 - 500 mg of hair is placed in a 15 ml steel bowl. A 15 mm steel ball is used as a grinding body. After five minutes of grinding, a fine powder is obtained (< 100 µm), which can be used for the following analysis.
The FRITSCH Planetary Micro Mill PULVERISETTE 7 classic line can be used for larger quantities, or for the grinding of two samples at the same time.
Silicon nitride and approximately 0.1 - 1 g of hair are added, with 7 x 15 mm grinding balls into a 45 ml grinding bowl made of sintered corundum or zirconium oxide. The grinding time takes between 5 - 20 minutes. A fine powder is attained (< 100 µm), which can be used for further analysis.
