APPLE GROVE, W.Va. (WV News) — Construction for the Nucor steel mill in Apple Grove is set to begin in October, according to John Musgrave in the Mason County Development Authority office. Building the new mill will take two years, and require the efforts of at least 1,000 construction workers. The new mill will occupy 1,900 acres.

Musgrave has worked closely with Nucor in bringing this project to fruition. He has been the director of the Development Authority for five years.

Prior to his current post, he had been the director of the state’s lottery commission, the acting secretary of revenue on three occasions, and the director of the Farmers Home Administration under presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He also served as the mayor of Point Pleasant for nine years from 1972-1981.

Nucor’s Apple Grove steel mill will be the largest in North America, and it will boast the largest electric furnace. It will provide 800 manufacturing jobs. It will come at a cost of $2.7 billion.

“It is the largest capital investment in the history of West Virginia,” Musgrave said.

He noted that the state competed successfully against neighboring states Ohio and Pennsylvania for the new mill.

The mill is projected to open in 2024, and will have the capacity to produce 3 million tons of sheet metal per year. The projected 10-year impact on West Virginia’s economy is staggering.

It is projected to add $25 billion to the economy, and increase the West Virginia tax revenue by about $439 million. John Farris will oversee the mill. He is the vice president and general manager of Nucor Steel West Virginia.

Musgrave points towards the measures Nucor has taken to build goodwill within the community. The company made a $1 million contribution to the Mason County Board of Education. Additionally, they made a $100,000 donation to local food banks.

Apart from local philanthropy, the company ranks as the largest recycler in North America, and participates in Relay For Life events for The American Cancer Society, and numerous charities for veterans.

For Musgrave, who came out of retirement to help foster more development in the community, the success with Nucor is very pleasing, but he has several projects he is working on to further enrich Mason County.

“We still have lots to do, Musgrave said.
